Skopelos Holidays
Skopelos for last minute breaks in the sun
Skopelos is the second largest of the Sporades Greek island chain, and recognisable as being the setting for the movie “Mamma Mia.” Just 12 miles long by six miles wide, its tiny area conceals hidden coves, scenic villages, vibrant forests and almost 400 churches – all still in use.
We at Future Travel see Skopelos as both romantic and picturesque; Skopelos appeals to those who like their last minute breaks to be peaceful and relaxing.
Even though the island lacks the broad sandy beaches of its neighbouring Skiathos, it is still very popular for family holidays, with plenty of shade on the beaches and shallow places to paddle.
Where to take family holidays in Skopelos
The main resorts for all inclusive holidays are Stafylos, Loutraki, Panormos and the areas around the capital of Skopelos town. The latter has a market, tavernas and some excellent tourist attractions, and is an ideal base for exploring the island. Those taking family breaks needn’t worry about it being too noisy – Skopelos consists of a harbour, museums and tavernas huddling below a historic fort. With over a quarter of the island’s 380 churches to its name as well, it has a distinctly reverent atmosphere.
If you are booking last minute breaks, choose between all inclusive holidays in purpose-built apartment hotels, chic family run boutiques and self-catering villas. Most families opt for all inclusive holidays near the beach - this is a hilly island, so for those who prefer to avoid walking the hills there is plenty of accommodation near the beaches.
Family holidays on the beach
There are numerous rocky inlets and pebbly bays which even in the height of summer are never crowded. Many can only be reached by boat, but there are plenty that are more accessible – try Stafilos, Agnondas or Velanio. They are always quiet, and the latter even has some sand.
Many people take last minute breaks here for the hiking experience. Skopelos is a vibrant, green emerald, dominated by lush olive groves, pine forests and rocky slopes cascading down to hidden, pebbly beaches. Inland there are monasteries, villages and fruit orchards, while family breaks aren’t complete without a boat trip to the National Marine Park where – if you’re lucky – you’ll see dolphins at play.
We at Future Travel have last minute breaks in Skopelos throughout the year and we can’t rate it highly enough for family holidays and romantic breaks.
