What to do on Monastir family holidays

The initial view of the town is breathtaking, with the spectacular Ribat tower and 9th century walls overlooking a buzzing modern beach resort. The marina offers gentle, relaxing strolls shaded by the walls, with numerous cafes and bars to slake your thirst along the way.
Those booking all inclusive holidays on the beach should take time to explore the older areas of the town. It was named after an Islamic order in the 8th century AD, and has many fascinating ancient relics. The fortress contains a unique museum and art gallery.  
There are numerous things to see in the surrounding area. Take an excursion to Chott el-Djerid, a giant lake located near the Algerian border, which is spellbindingly beautiful. You can also take a camel ride to a desert oasis at Douz, take an excursion to the coliseum at El Djem, or visit the fascinating cave dwellings at Matmata.
