Larnaca Holidays
Larnaca for great last minute holidays
Larnaca is known as the gateway to Cyprus, but despite housing the island’s international airport, it is no sprawling metropolis. One of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, and with some of the best beaches in Cyprus, it is a favourite choice for those booking last minute breaks.
People coming to Larnaca range from yachtsmen to theologians taking family breaks to do a bit of research. The region offers everything from broad sandy beaches, to ancient monasteries and churches, to international designer shops. No wonder people book last minute breaks here again and again.
Cultural last minute breaks
Cultural last minute breaks booked out of season offer the perfect chance to view some of the relics when the crowds are absent.
If you are familiar with the Old Testament you will know this as the city of Kition, whose ruins can still be seen, a little way out of town. Larnaca houses several ancient churches of local importance, including the 9th century Church of Ayios Lazaros – one of the most important in Cyprus, and said to be where the biblical Lazarus resided after his resurrection by Christ.
Family holidays in Larnaca offer numerous opportunities for both shopping and exploration. The entire region is a treasure trove of archaeological heritage, with ancient sites, museums and Neolithic remains to explore.
If you prefer modern culture, the palm-fringed harbour promenade is lined with chic bars, restaurants and cafes, while the town centre is chock full of international designer stores, as well as more local craft shops. The 400 berth marina offers a chic dining experience as you watch the millionaire yachts cruise in and out.
The District Museum contains numerous antiquities gathered from the region, from the Neolithic to Roman times. Meanwhile, the historic Larnaca fort located on the waterfront, dates from the 1620s and houses a fascinating Medieval Museum as well as a cultural centre.
