Family Holidays to Italy

Italians love children and children love Italy!  This is one of the best destinations for family breaks.  Although it’ll be the older kids that will enjoy visiting the various culture stops in Italy, a holiday to Italy is also about basking on a sunny café terrace while the children play happily around the piazza, wandering idly around the old fashioned winding streets and slurping on luxurious Italian ice cream.  Add to this the dreamy landscapes, rising hills, soaring mountains and beautiful forest lined lakes and sun kissed beaches and you have a holiday to die for.

When to travel to Italy

June and September are some of the best months to travel both to the cities and to the coast.  However, April, May and October are great times to go as the weather is mild and there are fewer tourists.  Easter is a fun and vibrant time to visit due to many religious festivals and events taking place across the country.

Summer is a great time for travelling with older kids as there is plenty of entertainment with street dancing and entertainment in the many town squares.  If it’s skiing you’re after then head to Italy from late December to the end of March.

Accommodation in Italy

Depending on the type of holiday you want there is accommodation to suit.  You may want a beach hotel with plenty of child friendly activities, crèche facilities and options of self catering or all inclusive holidays to Italy.  On the other hand you can find city hotels, apartments or even self catering farm houses out in the country.

Even with small children a visit to the cities should not be missed.  Milan, Florence, Rome and Venice are all fun destinations as long as the weather isn’t too hot.  Rome is breathtaking in spring for example.  If you are visiting the cities make your base outside a city so you can cool off after a day of sight seeing next to the pool.

Try out the beaches, particularly those on the islands of Sardinia, Sicily and Elba.  They have stunning stretches of sand, great cuisine and some exciting exploring opportunities like volcanoes, archaeology digs or castles.
