Arrecife Holidays
Arrecife for last minute breaks
Arrecife is the oldest town in the Canary Island of Lanzarote. Although many people take their family holidays at resorts like Puerto del Carmen, Arrecife is a worthy alternative, and has some excellent deals for last minute breaks.
Until the end of the 19th century, this small town was a maritime port. Although the surrounding coastal areas have seen rise to a large number of developments offering all inclusive holidays, the town remains much unchanged – helped by the influence of artist and sculptor Cesar Manrique, who worked hard to protect the island from development.
Family holidays in Arrecife
All inclusive holidays here are rising in popularity, as people begin to realise there’s more to family breaks than endless beaches and modern, featureless resorts. Arrecife is the Spanish word for “reef,” and there are certainly a few in the area. For this reason, the resort is also popular with surfers, who book last minute breaks here the moment they hear the surf’s up. However, the beaches are well away from the surfing beaches, and are safe for bathing.
The best beach in the area is the Playa Reducto, which offers excellent opportunities for sun bathing, paddling and swimming. The coarse black sand is the result of volcanic upheaval in the 19th century, but kids still enjoy digging in it.
Cultural last minute breaks to Arrecife
Out of season, Arrecife attracts hordes of older holiday makers, who enjoy treading the ancient old streets and taking strolls along the promenade. At El Charco, there is an ancient man-made lagoon where you can watch the fishermen at work, mending their nets. Arrecife is full of sights like this – don’t forget to bring a memory card for your camera!
As well as all inclusive holidays in modern resort hotels, the town offers boutique hotels, and self-catering accommodation in charming apartments. At the other end of the scale, Arrecife also has the island’s tallest hotel, the Grande – one of the few high rise buildings on Lanzarote. The view from the revolving restaurant at the top is breathtaking.
The Castillo de San Jose is an imposing 17th Century castle which today houses both an archaeological museum and a gallery of modern art. The town also has several lovely churches, among them San Gines, named after the patron saint of the island. From February to March, Arrecife holds a spectacular carnival. This is the best time to go - the cost of last minute breaks is rock bottom, but the temperatures are balmy and warm.
