City Breaks in Verona

Verona city breaks

A city break in “fair Verona” is a must for romantics, as well as anyone with an interest in Shakespearean drama. The city is replete with Renaissance architecture, from the magnificently Romanesque Basilica, to the poignant simplicity of Juliet’s Steps.
However, it isn’t just honeymooners and lovers of the Bard who book city breaks to Verona. The medieval city walls hide millennia of history, dating back to Roman times. Throughout the year, Verona hosts concerts at the massive Arena – a 15,000 seat Roman amphitheatre that is today the largest opera venue in Italy. It is an essential item on any city break itinerary, whether you book a concert or not. There is also a finely preserved Roman theatre – the Teatrum Romanum – north of the Old Town. The city’s archaeological museum is nearby.
Whatever your reason for booking city breaks in Verona – a honeymoon, a family break or just a romantic weekend away – you are bound to want to return.

Romantic city breaks

Verona is the City of Romance, where Romeo set his cap at sweet Juliet. Today, young lovers book city breaks there to view the Casa Giulietta (literally, Juliet's House) and see the famous balcony for themselves. Many a tryst has been set on a bridge across the river. The Adige snakes its way across the city, criss-crossed by a network of picturesque bridges. A romantic city break isn’t complete without a moonlit boat trip, followed by an intimate dinner for two at one of the city’s many Italian restaurants.
The Giardino di Palazzo Giusti is one of the finest Renaissance gardens in Italy, and another favourite place for romantics. If you have already set your eyes on the Big Day, then a visit to the Basilica of San Zeno Maggiore is a must – it is regarded as one of the finest examples of ecclesiastical Romanesque architecture in Europe.

City breaks for families

Verona makes for a fascinating city break, even if your courting days are long over. The fully restored 14th century Castelvecchio (Old Castle) is well worth a few hours of your time, and the Natural History Museum has a fascinating collection of biological and geological exhibits.
If you have time, hire a car and explore the surrounding countryside. Verona is just 30 minute’s drive from the beautiful Lake Garda, and is in the midst of Italy’s famous Soave and Valpolicella wine growing regions.
