City Breaks in St Tropez

St Tropez city breaks

People have been taking city breaks in the French Riviera town of St Tropez since the 1930s. Then, Hollywood starlets were “going topless” on the beaches at a time when it was unknown elsewhere.

The town was a small mediaeval fishing port on an inaccessible peninsula until the 19th century, when it was discovered by a bohemian group of artists and writers. The town quickly became known as a fashionable holiday resort with a reputation for hedonistic flamboyance.

Although a city break in St Tropez no longer appears quite so outrageous, there is still something about this resort which appeals to those looking for a bohemian-style city break with a carnival atmosphere. At the same time, it is becoming increasingly popular with families.

Why take city breaks in St Tropez?

St Tropez oozes cosmopolitan chic and Provencal charm in equal amounts. The waterfront is lined with terraced cafes, facing rows of bobbing yachts in the bay. Behind this is a network of picturesque streets and old houses, with local shops and restaurants serving traditional Provencal cuisine.

A city break isn’t complete without shopping at the Place aux Herbes. This historic old square has been at the centre of life in St Tropez for centuries, and is a busy marketplace of fish, flower, fruit and vegetable stalls. It is also the site of the St Tropez tourism office.

In May, people take city breaks in St Tropez for the annual Bravade festival, which has its roots in the 15th century. This traditional procession is held in honour of the town’s patron, St Tropes, and is accompanied by singing, dancing, gun salvos and other entertainments. The town also holds a jazz festival each October.

Of course, St Tropez is renowned for its nightlife, and at dusk the town comes alive with the sound of music from the nightclubs and bars.

St Tropez beachlife

Most people come to St Tropez for the beaches, which are among the best in France. If you are taking a city break with the family, the Plage des Cannebiers and Plage des Graniers are within easy reach of the town centre, and popular with families.

For a taste of the life that St Tropez is famous for, however, head for the beaches along the Baie de Pampelonne. The Plage de Tahiti is famous for its blatant exhibitionism, and when you’ve had enough of the sun, the promenade is lined with shops, restaurants and bars.

We at Future Travel have city breaks at St Tropez throughout the year, at unbeatable prices. Whether you travel as a couple, a family or alone, we recommend you discover this vibrant Riviera town for yourself.
