City Breaks in Lisbon

Lisbon city breaks

The capital of Portugal was known as the “golden city” of Europe during the 15th and 16th centuries. After being overlooked for many years, it was rediscovered in the 1990s, with the result that a city break in Lisbon is now a favourite with both culture buffs and fashionista’s, all year round.
The Old Lisbon has remained, but there is now a vibrant new town with chic shops, bars and nightclubs to further the enjoyment. The stunning Vasco da Gama Bridge has further improved things, with the result that city breaks in Lisbon are popular with both the Portuguese and other Europeans.

Things to see on a Lisbon city break

Lisbon is near the beaches and water sports of several coastal resorts, such as Estoril, Cascais and Costa da Caparica, as well as the forests and mountains of Sintra and sights like the stunning monastery of Mafra.
However, it has plenty of sights of its own. A city break to Lisbon isn’t complete without taking a rumbling tram ride through the mediaeval streets of Alfama, past the al fresco diners seated outside the scenic art deco cafés. The city was devastated by an earthquake in 1755, but much of the old part remains.
Lisbon has a vibrant maritime heritage, and no city break is complete without visiting the stunning Oceanarium, which is rated as one of the best in the world. The Vasco da Gama Aquarium has similar exhibits, on a smaller scale.

The exhibition park of Parque das Nacoes was upgraded in 1998, and has a host of things to see and do. Other family attractions include the Colombo Amusement Park and the Calouste Gulbenkian Planetarium.

Cultural city breaks in Lisbon

For those with an interest in maritime history, the Maritime Museum makes for a fascinating afternoon out. The Tower of Belem is another essential on the itinerary of any cultural city break. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it features amazing stone carvings and Moorish watchtowers. The Jeronimos Monastery is another UNESCO site, and the place where Vasco de Gama is buried.
In Alfama you will find the 10th century Castelo de Sao Jorge – a steep, but worthwhile climb. The Bairro Alto district is a 15th century lofty enclave that can only be reached by the unique Santa Justa Elevator, which runs from the lower part of the city to the top.
